History & Architecture

Thyagaraja Temple is a Shiva temple, located Thiruvarur, Tamil Nadu, India. The temple’s masonry structure was built during the Chola dynasty in the 9th century. Later expansions are attributed to Vijayanagar rulers of the Sangama Dynasty (1336–1485 CE), the Saluva Dynasty and the Tuluva Dynasty (1491–1570 CE). This makes the temple more than 1000 years old!

Deity

The main idol of worship is Lord Veedhi Vidangar (Thiyagarajar), depicted in the Somaskanda form and his consort Parvathi is depicted as Kondi. The presiding deity is revered in the Tevaram, a 7th century Saiva canonical work, written in Tamil by saint poets known as the nayanars and classified as Paadal Petra Sthalam.

Interesting Facts

• The temple chariot of the Thyagaraja temple, weighing 360 tonnes (790,000 lb) and measuring 96 feet (29 m) in height is the largest temple chariot in India.
• Thyagaraja Temple’s complex is spread over 30 acres, making it one of the largest in India. It houses 9 gateway towers known as gopurams. The tallest is the eastern tower, with 4 stories and a height of 30 metres (98 ft).
